Rev. Jeremy Sin, Executive Director of the Chinese Baptist Fellowship of the US and Canada, recently contacted the pastor, deacon, and the director of the Social Service of Tai Po Baptist Church following the catastrophic fire in Tai Po, Hong Kong that claimed over 150 lives.
According to Mr. Kin-man Ng, Director of Tai Po Baptist Church Social Service, they have distributed HK$6,000 relief funds per family for 600 affected families. Additionally, 150 tablet computers were provided to students for accessing e-books, and school bus services were arranged for students relocated to distant accommodations. Tai Po Baptist Church had originally planned major renovations, leaving six floors vacant. The church has now postponed the construction to utilize the space as a disaster relief coordination center.
The key post-disaster priorities for Tai Po Baptist Church’s Social Service are distribution of relief supplies and financial aid, student care services, emotional support, and post-disaster mental health rehabilitation.
Established over two decades ago, the Tai Po Baptist Church Social Service has grown from an initial staff of two or three to over 60 employees. This ministry is entirely self-supported by the church without government funding, serving the community as a witness for Christ.
Tai Po Baptist Church operates Tai Po Baptist Church Public Primary School. The school building became unusable due to the fire, and 30 students’ homes were also destroyed by the blaze. Through the school’s efforts, physical locations have been secured to resume classes.
Please continue praying for the affected families and the Tai Po community, asking the Lord to comfort the grieving. Pray for the staff of the Social Services Department who have worked tirelessly over the past week, asking the Lord to sustain their physical, mental, and spiritual well-being and strengthen them. Also pray for the teachers and students of the Tai Po Baptist Public School, that they may learn and grow normally. Pray especially for Tai Po Baptist Church, that the Lord may comfort her affected members. In this unique time, may He grant them strength and grace to bring healing and hope in Christ to the community amidst its grief.
